MACON, Georgia (41NBC / WMGT) – Navicent Health Medical Center continues to paint the city in pink for breast cancer awareness month. In an effort to detect early-stage cancer, Navicent has invited walk-in patients to get breast cancer screening all day Tuesday.
"Screening mammograms will become the best tool for early detection of breast cancer. Early detection means better treatment and better results for our patients, "said the chief mammography technician at Navicent Latasha Hill.
Christa Lloyd, Chief Nurse, explains that women do not undergo mammograms because of two main factors.
"Cost, but we have grant funding costs available today," Lloyd said.
With a quick assessment based on income, this will determine if you qualify.
"They are eligible for a grant based on their household income. So do not let this be a decisive factor in not passing your mammogram. We want to be here to help you. We want to work with patients and the community, "said Lloyd.
Another common obstacle encountered by Lloyd is the fact that patients do not have a primary care physician.
"Patients sometimes say," Well, I do not have a primary care physician, so I can not have a mammogram. "That's not true," said Lloyd.
Doctors were waiting at the clinic to answer patients' questions.
"If we need to follow up on the screening mammogram, we have a team ready to respond and we will work to develop a plan tailored to meet the needs of each patient," said Lloyd.
Lloyd says women should start testing at age 40.
"The importance is that you have to sift, because if we can filter, we can save your life," said Lloyd.
According to Lloyd, if you have a family history of breast cancer, start the test more than 40 years. She recommends to be between 30 and 35 years old.>
