A sailor who died aboard an aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean during routine flight operations on the bridge was struck by the propeller of an aircraft, according to the US Navy.

The Navy said Wednesday in a statement that the apprentice Joseph Min Naglak had just got an E-2C Hawkeye radar plane on the flight deck.

Naglak's death occurred Monday aboard USS George H.W. Bush in the Atlantic. The aircraft carrier had to go to sea to train with 30 other warships, and Hurricane Florence pulled up a few days earlier.

The navy said the incident was still under investigation.

"The loss of a ship mate is a heartbreaking experience for a warship crew," said the Cmdr. Naval Air Force spokesman Dave Hecht reported on the Navy Times. "Those aboard the USS George H.W. Bush will mourn the death of Naglak and will always remember him for his dedication and dedication to our nation.

The 21-year-old enlisted in the Navy in his home state of New Jersey in April 2017.

Four months later, he had completed his training in Pensacola, Florida, and was introduced to the ship.

The ship remains at sea and the air operations have resumed.
