In addition to the rookie of the year – who went to Ben Simmons' 76ers – the other most contentious title this season was Coach of the Year. It was also the most embarrassing price … by far.
That's because the trophy went to Dwane Casey of the Detroit Pistons, who, of course, did not train the Pistons last season.
He coached the Toronto Raptors, leading them to a record 59 wins and first place in the Eastern Conference. But when the Raptors bowed again at the start of the playoffs at the hands of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Raptors decided to make a change.
Casey was released shortly after the end of the season, the Raptors having eventually replaced him with assistant coach Nick Nurse.
It did not take long for Casey to take a new concert, though, accept a five-year agreement with the Detroit Pistons earlier in the offseason. Casey beat Brad Stevens of Boston Celtics and Quin Snyder of Utah Jazz for the coach of the year.
