There were a lot of votes that were close to last year and a group that was radically different in the NBA's annual survey of general managers.
The NBA released Wednesday the results of its annual survey of general managers and LeBron James was elected most likely to win the title of most useful player, the player who requires coaches to make the most adjustments, best leader, best passer, best IQ for basketball, most versatile, best little striker and the addition of offseason is likely to have the biggest impact this season.
The Lakers star was chosen in all these categories last season in addition to being elected post-season acquisition likely to have the most important impact. Paul George won this vote last year.
Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo was named the best player to sign if a franchise started today, which is an honor for Karl-Anthony Towns last season. Antetokounmpo got 30% of the votes in this category while Anthony Davis of the Pelicans got 23%, Kevin Durant of the Warriors got 20%, James got 17%, Warriors guard Stephen Curry, got 7% and the 76ers' center, Joel Embiid, got 3% of the vote.
Nuggets goaltender Jamal Murray was selected as the most likely player to play in a playoff season, with Lakers' Brandon Ingram and Celtics Jayson Tatum tied for second place in the vote.
Celtics coach Brad Stevens was voted best league coach with 47% of the vote. It was only the fourth season since 2006-07 that the Spurs coach, Gregg Popovich, had finished second instead of first in the poll, since he had only received 30% this season, compared to 82% last year. The only other times a coach was selected, other than Popovich, was Pat Riely in 2006-07, as he was coming out of the Heat's first championship, and Phil Jackson in 2009-10 and 2010-11, when Lakers were title champions, then repeat. Popovich was second in the vote three of those four years. Jazz coach Jerry Sloan beat him in 2010-11.
Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic was chosen to win the rookie of the year award, but the men's important Deandre Ayton of the Suns and Jaren Jackson Jr. of the Grizzlies tied for the top spot as the rookie was best player of the next five years.
The Warriors were once again chosen to win the championship with 87% of the votes and the Rockets and Celtics were tied for second place with 7%.
