The father of NBA veteran Richard Jefferson was shot dead Wednesday in a car in Compton, California, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Elder Richard Allen Jefferson was 65 years old. The resident of Inglewood, Calif., Was declared dead after being rushed to hospital Wednesday night with gunshot wounds to his torso. According to police reportJefferson was shot around 7 pm when a dark colored vehicle stopped and an attacker opened fire.

The investigation is still ongoing and the police department has not identified any suspects in the murder.

Jefferson, 38, is in the twilight of an NBA career spanning 18 seasons with eight different teams, including the New Jersey Nets early in career and as a member of the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers champion. He played last season in 2017-18 with the Denver Nuggets and still has to sign with a team for the 2018-19 campaign.

Jefferson, who grew up in the bustle of South Central, moved to Phoenix with his mother who remarried to finish high school and then attended the University of Arizona before start his career in the NBA.
