The Franklin County teenager accused of having beheaded her mother in 2017 was found not guilty by reason of insanity and engaged in public psychiatric care.
At his Louisburg hearing on Monday, Oliver Funes Machada rose and told Superior Court Judge Henry Hight Jr .: "I just want to say I'm sorry," according to a WRAL video. "Let's hope God forgives me."
Machada, 18 at the time of the assassination, called 911 and told the emergency officers that he had killed his mother "because I wanted to." Sheriff Kent Winstead reported at the time big butcher knife.
Prosecutors dropped the first degree murder charges last year and transferred Machada to the Butner Central Regional Hospital to assess his suitability for the case. Hight noted that he had received prolonged psychiatric treatment twice before the crime.
At a hearing on Monday, a doctor at the Regional Center described him as being extremely delusional, persuaded that he was acting according to God's instructions. The doctor stated that during Machada's treatment, he paced in his room and barked like a dog. The doctor said that he would not want to see the accused outside of a secure place.
At the hearing, Hight concluded that Machada was suffering from a psychotic illness that led to the murder.
He said, "Jesus wanted that to happen," said Hight, "He would have stopped me if he did not want that to happen."
