Texas officials said the bananas donated to a state jail turned out to have nearly $ 18 million worth of cocaine hidden in their boxes.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (DCJ) described the discovery in a surprisingly complicated Facebook article that began: "Sometimes life gives you lemons. Sometimes it gives you bananas. And sometimes, it gives you something you never expect!
The two banana pallets were given because they were already ripe, said the DCJ, and arrived Friday from Ports of America to Freeport.
"One of the boxes felt different from the others," said the DCJ. "[Officials] He cut the straps, untied the box and opened it.
"Inside, under a pack of bananas … another package! Inside of that? What appeared to be a white powdery substance. They immediately informed the port authorities and waited for their instructions. "
DCJ stated that the pallets contained "quite the hiding place": 540 packages of cocaine in 45 boxes of bananas, "with an estimated market value of $ 17,820,000".
DCJ reported that federal officials and US customs and border protection services were investigating.
"What a find by boys in gray!"
