After beating Illinois 54 to 35 last week, Nebraska stayed in Lincoln for its last home game of the season against the Michigan State Spartans. After scoring 38 points in the first half last week, the Huskers (3-7, 2-5 Big Ten) had a more moderate first half against the Spartans (6-4, 4-3).
Highlights of the first quarter:

(MSU): Nebraska got the ball to open the game, but only won a first try before punting. Michigan State Connor Heyward, a halfback, carried the ball four times for a total of 37 yards. The Spartans posted a 34-yard effort to give Michigan State a 3-0 lead.

(NEB): Nebraska imposed a three-point assist on the next Michigan State record, but Kade Warner, the rookie's wide receiver, returned the ball to the Spartans on a fumble. Nebraska's defense strengthened and forced another punt, closing the first quarter with Michigan State's 3-0 victory.
Highlights of the second quarter:

(MSU): The state of Michigan continued to pose ball safety problems for the Huskers, while rookie quarterback Adrian Martinez escaped on the 21-meter Nebraska line. A controversial unsportsmanlike conduct penalty kept Spartans training, but a strong defensive effort forced an attempt at placement on a 41-yard field goal. The free kick shot from the left post, now Michigan 3-0 with 10:58 to play in the second quarter.

(NEB): Two 13-yard passes for second-year striker Jack Stoll and a coarse-pass penalty helped Nebraska down to the 33-yard Michigan State line. The Huskers' training went off the hook and a fourth conversion attempt returned the ball to the Spartans.

(NEB): The Huskers had their last chance to score in the first period with just over three minutes left in the second quarter. Devine running back Ozigbo scored a 12-yard carry in the opening game, but Nebraska was finally able to counter.

(MSU): The Spartans, trapped deep in their home territory, seemed intent on beating the time, before rookie quarterback Rocky Lombardi won two draws in the quarter for 24 and 11 yards. A strong Nebraska defense eventually forced an interception that sealed a 3-0 lead at half-time for Michigan State.
Other notes:

Michigan State quarterback Rocky Lombardi started the game in place of injured Brian Lewerke. Rookie Redshirt struggled with accuracy in his second career start, completing only 4-17 passes for 32 yards.

A case of fumble infection hit Nebraska in the first period, while the Huskers missed the ball four times, Michigan State recovering two of the fumbles.

JD Spielman, one of the most prominent players in the game, injured in the leg, the Spartans high school secondary limited Nebraska's other main goal, the senior Stanley Morgan Jr. Five different Huskers have passed first-pass half, but Morgan Jr. was not one of them.
