Nebraska's Unusual Tourist Campaign: "Honestly, it's not for everyone"

(CNN) – Many cities, states and countries around the world are spending millions of dollars on advertising campaigns to encourage people to go there.

But not Nebraska.

The central United States is better known for corn production than for the must-see destinations.
Unlike neighboring Kansas, this is not the scenery of a famous film such as "The Wizard of Oz" and unlike Oklahoma, it does not have its own Broadway musicals . There is no Mount Rushmore or Gateway Arch immediately recognizable for use on postcards.

It's good, though.

The new tourist slogan of the Cornhusker State is actually an anti-slogan: "Honestly, this is not for everyone".

The campaign, launched in October 2018, went viral overnight – but it was the result of a year-long campaign led by the state's tourism council, aimed at educating the population on Nebraska while displaying a sense of humor.

"We knew we needed to create groundbreaking changes to change perceptions," said John Ricks, Executive Director of the Nebraska Tourism Commission, CNN Travel. "As the country least likely to be visited by the country, we designed the campaign by talking to nonconformists and translating their generally unfavorable perceptions into a different but quite honest approach."

Before launching the campaign, Mr. Ricks and his team interviewed residents of Nebraska and neighboring states to find out what they associated with tourism in Nebraska.

The answer? A little depressing. Even some locals said "there is nothing to do here."

Data from a 2017 survey by MMGY that Nebraska was the least visited US state were even more disappointing.

However, rather than getting discouraged, Nebraska decided to turn comments into campaign, injected with a dose of humor cleared.

In commercials, slogans such as "There is nothing to do here" and "Famous for our flat and boring landscape" are associated with images of waterfalls, rock formations and other natural elements definitely not flat.

Will this smart viral campaign help Nebraska climb the ranks from # 50 to # 49? May be. Or maybe not. It does not matter.
