Neil deGrasse Tyson defended Tesla CEO Elon Musk in an interview with TMZ, calling it "the best thing we've had since Thomas Edison".
Tyson defended Musk's conduct in an interview last week with Joe Rogan in which Musk was filmed smoking marijuana. (The recreational use of marijuana is legal in California, where the interview was filmed.)
"Can they leave him alone? Let the man go high if he wants to become high," said Tyson.
Before his interview with Rogan, Musk told The New York Times in August that marijuana is hurting the ability to work.
"Weed is not useful for productivity.There is a reason for the word" stoned. "You just sit like a stone on the weeds," said Musk.
Tyson also discussed the process by which Musk explored the possibility of converting Tesla into a private company, claiming that Musk should be accountable to the public since Tesla is negotiated on public markets.
"He must obey the SEC clearly, but if he does not want to obey the SEC, then he must have a private company, so he can do what he wants," Tyson said.
In August, Musk sparked controversy over his statements about wanting to take Tesla privately, which raised questions about the certainty of Musk's funding in a tweet and the exact source of the funding. Fox Business and the New York Times reported that the SEC had sent Tesla summonses regarding Tesla's plans to explore private statements and Musk on the process. Musk finally said that Tesla would remain a public company.
Tyson later stated that he was a fan of Musk, suggesting that he was one of the most innovative people working today.
"Count me as an Elon team," said Tyson. "It's the only game in town, it's the best thing we've had since Thomas Edison."
