Netflix Inc. is planning to open a new film and television production center in New Mexico, the latest venture of the entertainment giant's ongoing ambition to increase its content cache.
Netflix announced Monday that it was preparing to acquire ABQ Studios, a production studio complex located in Albuquerque, New Jersey, and owned by the operator of Pacifica Studios Ventures.
Netflix said the company hoped to generate a billion dollar production in the state over the next decade and create up to 1,000 jobs a year.
Netflix has announced plans to produce film and television series such as "Daybreak", "Chambers" and "Messiah" at its new facility and in other areas of the state. "Rooms" and a "messiah" are already being produced in the Albuquerque area, Netflix said.
The movie "The Avengers" by Marvel Studios, released in 2012, was partly shot at ABQ studios, as was "The Lone Ranger" and "Sicario".
The state is providing Netflix with up to $ 10 million in funding for economic development, while the city will commit $ 4.5 million for the project, the company said.
