Netflix has announced that it is relaunching the popular Nickelodeon animated series "Avatar: The Last Airbender" as a live action series. Original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will serve as showrunners and executive producers of the live-action program, whose production is expected to begin in 2019.
"Avatar: The Last Airbender" debuted on Nickelodeon in February 2005 and lasted three seasons, ending in July 2008. The series follows the adventures of Aang, a "master air" able to manipulate the four elements . Aang teams up with two friends, Katara and Sokka, on a mission to defeat the Firefighters Nation.

Eight years after the film adaptation of Mr. Night Shyamalan in 2010, the promising not to whitewash the live action cast are actors of Asian descent. Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender" is often cited as a reference in discussions of Hollywood's whitewash problem.
