New Caledonia: French islands about to vote for independence

New Caledonia, the French Pacific Islands, is due to vote on sovereignty on Sunday 30 years after a period of turmoil.

The territory, which has a population of 269,000, has experienced deep divisions between its indigenous people, the Kanaks and the Europeans who live there.

An agreement concluded in 1988, the Matignon Agreement, proposed to end the direct power of Paris and a vote on independence in 1998. This vote was postponed until the 2018 vote.

Even if it is a non-vote, it is always possible to call two other referendums.
