HUNTINGTON – Five new cases of hepatitis A have been identified in Kanawha County and one in Cabell County, according to press releases from the area's health departments.
Cracker Barrel, located at 3 Cracker Barrel Road in Barboursville, has a confirmed Food Services Worker with Hepatitis A.
Restaurant patrons have a very low risk of contracting hepatitis A from foods prepared in the restaurant; however, clients who wish to further reduce risk may consider getting vaccinations with their health care provider or pharmacy if they have eaten food at the restaurant between June 13 and June 22.
An investigation by the Cabell-Huntington Health Department on the restaurant revealed no violation of the food handling protocol. The restaurant has closed voluntarily for disinfectant cleaning.
In Kanawha County, McDonald's at 64 St. Patrick's in Charleston, Pizza Hut at 603 3rd St. in St. Albans, Paul's Polar Park Drive Inn at 9850 Teays Valley Road at Scott Depot, Sakura at 230 Nitro Place at Cross Lanes and Sam's Club at 2500 Mountaineer Boulevard in South Charleston each have a confirmed case of a worker with hepatitis A.
Infection periods for facilities are May 27 to June 17 at McDonald's, from May 28 to June 18 at Pizza Hut, May 21 to June 19 at Paul's Polar Park Drive Inn , from June 7th to 28th at Sakura and from May 12th to June 2nd at Sam's Club. The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department recommends that clients who have consumed food or beverages at one of the facilities monitor the symptoms of hepatitis A.
It can go away for up to 50 days after exposure to the virus so that a person gets sick, but most people will experience symptoms within 28 to 30 days of being sick. ;exposure. According to KCHD, public transmission by a food service worker is rare and no hepatitis A has been passed on to clients of the Kanawha and Putnam County restaurants. Cabell-Huntington Health Department also confirmed zero cases of hepatitis A contracted by a restaurant client.
West Virginia has been identified in a multi-state outbreak of hepatitis A that includes Kentucky, Michigan, Indiana and, as early as Friday, Ohio.
