New hearing aid allows users to program it on their own

On October 5, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the marketing of a new hearing aid. It can amplify sounds in people 18 years and older with mild to moderate perceived hearing loss. According to the FDA, the Bose hearing aid is a wireless hearing aid suitable for air conduction.

Permanent or temporary hearing loss may be due to exposure to loud noises, aging, certain medical conditions and other factors. To hear speech and sounds, permanent hearing impaired people can use hearing aids.

Air conduction hearing aids can pick up sound vibrations via one or more microphones and the signal is processed, amplified, and delivered via an earpiece placed in the ear canal.

Through a mobile application on their phone, patients can adjust the hearing aid via a mobile application. In real time and in real environments, without the assistance of a health professional, this technology allows users to adapt themselves to the hearing settings.

The date of clinical studies on 125 patients has been reviewed by the FDA. The study shows that the results obtained with the self-adaptation of the device are comparable on average to those obtained with a professional adaptation of the same device with regard to the amount of amplification selected, the speech tests in the noise and the general advantage.
