Saturday was National Drug Recovery Day and across the country, it was harder for others to find and abuse prescription drugs.
DEA agents present at the scene of the event said that even the correct use of prescription drugs could turn into addiction.
"Sometimes you get these prescription drugs for a legitimate reason and the addiction starts at home unintentionally," said DEA supervisor Jacob Prieto.
The agents said that's why these national days are so important for families.
"We want to prevent our friends, family and loved ones from having the opportunity to abuse opioids," said DEA Deputy Special Agent Ron Riddle.
The depot site at the Armory has seen hundreds of people use the option of passing by car. Some stopped to talk about why the event is important to them.
"I have grandchildren, there are people who are visiting my home. I have a son who is disabled. We have people coming to look after him, so we have to protect them as well as ourselves, "said the worried citizen Mary Blessing.
Other people who have worked on the event have collected more than just prescription pills. They gathered stories of tragedy and triumph over addiction.
"They tell us personal stories about families, people and personal friends with addictions," said Sgt of the US National Guard. Brenda Reyes said.
Event organizers said the goal across New Mexico is to get 8,000 pounds of prescription drugs on Saturday.
