New Philadelphia Flyers mascot draws "scary" comparisons with Otto de SU

Meet "Gritty", the new mascot of the Philadelphia Flyers.

The NHL team unleashed Monday the blurry orange creature with eyes riveted during a pre-season game against the Boston Bruins. The Flyers lost, 4-3, but the first reactions to Gritty – who fell on the ice and shot someone in the back with a t-shirt gun during his debut – added the # Insult to injury.

Fans quickly called Gritty "terrifying", "creepy" and "fuel nightmare". Some social media users also offered unfavorable comparisons to other sports mascots, claiming he looked like the child in love with Syracuse's Otto the Orange and MLB's Phillie Phanatic.

Philly said that Gritty is "the ultimate Flyers fan who loves orange and black, but is unwelcoming to anyone who opposes his team." An accompanying story, with some disturbing details, says that he won the nickname because of an attitude similar to that of the team:

He says it's been longer than we know it, and the recent construction at the Wells Fargo Center has upset his secret stash forcing him to show his face publicly for the first time. He has quirks both humorous and strange. A number of times, he was caught eating snow directly from the Zamboni machine, and without the knowledge of most, his love for hot dogs has inflated the totals of Dog Dollar Flyers consumption since years.

That being said, it is undeniable that he is one of ours.

So, that is Gritty. Check out some of the funniest (and weirdest) reactions to the new Flyers mascot:
