CLARENCE, NY – It was a great day for big pumpkins; and we mean big!

The Great Pumpkin Farm was the perfect Sunday for World Pumpkin Day. The contest is part of the autumn festival of the farm.

Last year, Andy Wolf of Little Valley took first place and set a record with a 1,571.5 pound gourd. This year, this record was shattered when a pumpkin grown by Karl Haist of the Clarence Center weighed in at £ 2,000! Haist was second in the competition last year.

The first prize is normally $ 5,000, but it doubles if one of the pumpkins exceeds 2,000 pounds. Thus, the first prize won by Haist now brings him $ 10,000.

Cash prizes were also awarded for second to sixth places.
