NEW YORK – If you needed another reason to move up a gear or realize it, a new study from the World Health Organization shows that more than a quarter of adults do not make enough 'exercise.

Trying to exercise during the day can be difficult, but according to the study, the sedentary lifestyle does a lot more harm than good and the lack of exercise can increase the chances of common diseases.

The study, published in the Lancet Global Health Journal, collected data on nearly 2 million participants worldwide and found that in 2016, more than a quarter of adults were underactive, compared with 23% in 2010.

That's about one in three women and one in four men.

According to one author of the study, Regina Guthold, inactivity levels are twice as high in the richest countries as in low-income countries. Guthold said it could be related to more sedentary occupations and motorized transportation.

The World Health Organization offers this solution: aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of intensive exercise each week.

Not participating in these weekly sweat sessions can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia and some cancers.
