A US court of appeal has ordered a new trial in a lawsuit accusing Led Zeppelin of having copied an obscure 1960s instrumental for the introduction of the group's iconic title, stairway to Heaven, released for the first time in 1971 on the band's fourth album.

Two years ago, a Federal Court jury in Los Angeles found Led Zeppelin did not steal the signature guitar part – or & rt; riff & # 39; in the jargon – of the song Taurus, a song recorded by the American group Spirit.

However, a panel of three judges from the 9th US Court of Appeals in San Francisco said the lower court judge had given the jury erroneous instructions, misleading jurors over the author's right relevant to the prosecution. The case was referred to court for another trial.

according to The Guardian, a telephone message left with Led Zeppelin's lawyer, Peter Anderson, was not immediately returned.

Michael Skidmore, Estate Director of Spirit Group guitarist Randy Wolfe, filed a lawsuit against Led Zeppelin in 2015.

The jury handed down their verdict to Led Zeppelin after a five-day trial in which Led Zeppelin musicians Jimmy Page and Robert Plant testified. Page states that he composed the music and Plant said he wrote the lyrics.
