Terrelle Pryor, injured wide catcher, of the New York Jets announced Saturday the exit of his injured wide receiver, told Adam Schefter, of the league, to ESPN.
Pryor has a tear in the groin and should miss about two weeks.
The Jets are interested in bringing back Pryor when he is in good health, a source told Schefter, but other teams are also likely to be interested.
The former Ohio State quarterback has captured a touchdown pass in each of the last two games of the Jets, against the Broncos and Colts. He has 14 receptions for 235 yards on the season.
Pryor has only recorded 20 receptions for 240 yards and a touchdown in nine games with the Washington Redskins in 2017.
He signed a $ 4.5 million one-year contract, including a $ 1 million signing bonus, with the Jets in March.
On Thursday, Pryor expressed confidence in his ability to contribute.
"If I play this week, hopefully I'll come back and do what I have to do," Pryor told ESPN. "… I'm a playmaker. Throw me the ball and I'll get there."
Pryor has been injured since his signing with the Jets. In the spring, he fractured his ankle and had to undergo surgery, which cost him the essentials of the pre-season. The Jets never revealed the injury. Pryor revealed the nature of the injury in August, resulting in a severe rebuke from coach Todd Bowles.
The Jets could replace him on the roster by hiring Deontay Burnett, the rookie wide receiver, into the coaching squad. Burnett was Sam Darnold's teammate at USC.
The receiving corps are mutilated and they need bodies. The only healthy receivers are Robby Anderson, Jermaine Kearse, Andre Roberts and Charone Peake. Roberts and Peake are mainly special team players.
Rich Cimini of ESPN contributed to this report.
