"As is claimed, Paul M. Rosenfeld has devised a twisted plan to draw attention to his political ideology by killing himself at the National Mall in Washington, DC, thus potentially harming many others," said American lawyer Geoffrey Berman. "Rosenfeld's so-called plan for a detonation on polling day is contrary to our democratic principles."
Rosenfeld is said to have supported a political belief called "trimming", which advocates random selection of government officials.
Rosenfeld reportedly bought large quantities of black powder on the Internet to build a big bomb in his basement, authorities said. He had previously manufactured and tested other small bombs, according to authorities.
When FBI agents ransacked his home, they discovered "what appeared to be a functional explosive device weighing about 200 pounds".
The bomb was removed from his home and transported to a safe place, officials said.
FBI agents could be seen removing cards from Rosenfeld's home in Tappan on Wednesday.
Rosenfeld was accused of illegally fabricating a destructive device, punishable by a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment. He is also charged with interstate transportation and receipt of an explosive, punishable by a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.
