QUEENS – The senator from the state of New York, Jose Peralta, died at the age of 47, state legislators confirmed Thursday.
Chris Sosa, director of communications of the New York State Senate issued the following statement:
"I can confirm that Senator Jose Peralta passed away on Wednesday, we have no other details to publish at the moment and ask that the privacy of the family be respected." Thank you to all those who have extended the hand with words of kindness and support. "
Peralta died as a result of a "medical emergency" at the Elmhurst Hospital Center, around 8 pm, surrounded by her family. On Wednesday, a friend of the family told PIX11.
Senator Peralta represented the 13th district state senate, a diverse district covering Jackson Heights, Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst and parts of Woodside and Astoria.
Jose Peralta became the first Dominican-born American to be elected to the Senate of the State of New York in March 2010 after winning a special election. He was re-elected the same year at a general election. Senator Peralta has since been re-elected in the 2012, 2014 and 2016 general elections, according to the New York Senate website.
In this year's Democratic primary elections, Peralta was defeated by Jessica Ramos as Senator.
Tributes poured into social media for the beloved senator.
Ruben Diaz, President of The Bronx Borough, wrote: "Jose Peralta will be sorely missed.He was a good father, a loving husband and a devoted servant.Our city and our state are greatly weakened after losing Rest in peace, my friend. "
