Saturday, October 13, 2018, 7:31 pm – A woman in the Australian state of Queensland suffered serious bruising while protecting her little daughter from a damaging hail storm last week.

Fiona Simpson, 23, was driving on the road with her four-month-old daughter Clara and her 78-year-old grandmother when the group was caught in the violent storm. Simpson told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that she had stopped and had been thinking about waiting for the end of the storm.

But the car was not up to the task of sheltering the family and a large hail began to break the windows, forcing Simpson to jump on the back seat and try to protect his daughter.

"It was so scary, but we did not have time to be scared, everything happened so fast," she told the TV channel, adding, "I've dropped my eyes and I saw that she was screaming, but I could not even hear her, that's how it was. "

She and her grandmother were severely beaten by hail and, once the fight ended, Simpson drove the damaged car to the help of a nearby house. An ambulance was called and all three were taken to the hospital.

"It's only when I arrived in the ambulance that I realized that if I did not do it [Clara] could have been seriously injured or killed, anything could have happened, "she told ABC.

Simpson suffered several bruises, but his grandmother was more seriously injured. ABC reports that the skin of the elderly woman's left arm was "shredded", while the other arm was "completely black", requiring hospitalization.

The storms that hit this part of Queensland have been damaging. In addition to abundant hail, torrential rains, high winds and at least one tornado have been reported, with some 10,000 households being deprived of electricity.

"It could have been a lot worse, that's for sure," Simpson told 9News broadcaster. "You can replace a car but not a life."
