FEDEX FIELD – The last game we saw, Redskins rookie receiver Trey Quinn was the third quarter of the first game of the season on September 9th.
Sunday afternoon against the Houston Texans, in his first match after a right ankle injury, Quinn found himself on the verge of playing the quarterback.
It was not the plan when the day started. But no one knew that quarterback Alex Smith would have a broken leg. With substitute Colt McCoy in the game and shots on goal, Quinn and forward Jordan Reed were the options if another injury was needed.
Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Quinn was his man if McCoy was to fall. Third-party quarterbacks are rarely active anyway, but Washington does not have it on its 53-man roster or training squad.
"If that was the case, I should go and do some plays," Quinn said. "I was ready."
Quinn is not a quarterback, but he is an excellent athlete. At 12, he competed in the Little League World Series and started a draw. He still holds the Louisiana record in receptions (357) and receptions (6,566). He played two years at LSU and two at SMU before the Redskins named him in the seventh round for the final selection of the 2018 draft.
Quinn is injured on the right ankle by feeling punt in the first game of the season against the Arizona Cardinals in the first week and just returned from the injured reserve this week.
Reed was actually a high school quarterback and was recruited to this post by the University of Florida. He even played some as a freshman and had three touchdown passes to an interception, but quickly went to a tight end. He too was ready – but the coaches did not tell him to warm up.
"Nah. Because you do not even want to put that in the atmosphere, "said Reed.
Aside from Jinxes, Quinn and Reed did not need to intervene at the shift to contribute. Both had great days. Reed caught seven passes for 71 yards and one touchdown. Quinn stayed in the slot machine slot for so long with injured Jamison Crowder and caught four passes for 49 yards.
Reed and Smith, before his injury, had a hiccup in the end zone. A pass to Reed was intercepted and returned 101 yards for a touchdown by Texan safety, Justin Reid. During this third and eighth run, Reed performed what Gruden called a "swelling road". But Smith had to go around the Texans outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney and the nose-tackle was also looping towards him. Reed took an angle to the ball that Smith did not expect.
The quarterback did not have a clear view of his opponent's position and had to cross the pass. The result gives Houston a 17-7 lead over what could have been a 10-10 game or even a Redskins advance.
Reed more than made up for that with his touchdown play after McCoy had to get in for the injured Smith. This catch reduced Houston's lead to 17-14, while he remained 4:47 to play in the third quarter.
Quinn, meanwhile, caught a 15-yard pass in the 2nd and 11th to drop the ball at the Houston 15 with 47 seconds left in the first quarter. Three times later, running back Adrian Peterson was in the end zone and the Texans advance was reduced to 10-7.
Quinn also caught 13 yards on the 3rd and 6th in the second quarter to bring the ball to the Houston 16. This occurred during the unfortunate attempt that ended with the return of the interception to 101 yards.
Quinn's 11-yard lead at 33 seconds from the end of the match was the last for Washington and allowed Houston to score 45. Three times later, kicker Dustin Hopkins attempted to win for 63 yards.
Quinn was also immediately inserted into the formation as a punt returner, but the only Texas punt was out of bounds. Expect him to come back in this role against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day.
"Trey had a very big game for us," said Reed. "He is a good player. This is a very good player. "
