HOUSTON (AP) – When DeAndre Hopkins had the chance to play in overtime on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, Houston's star catcher was determined to redeem himself after losing a rare fumble in the third quarter.
He did that with a spectacular 49-yard run that allowed the Texans to score, and Ka'im Fairbairn scored a 36-yard goal to bring the Texans to a 19-16 victory.
Hopkins, who rushed for 151 yards on the ground, grabbed a short pass from Deshaun Watson and twice walked away from the game's contenders to strengthen the game.
"I fumbled, so I knew I had to play a piece," Hopkins said. "There were a lot of guys on the field but I was not trying to get in. A field goal would win the match and I knew it, I knew where I was and I felt that guys were coming around me. "
Coach Bill O 'Brien said Hopkins had approached him after fumbling and had simply said, "I'm going to catch up for that." Watson knew that he would do that when he dropped the balloon.
"The playmakers play whenever we need him, and we needed him to play," Watson said. "I offered him to play, and he did what he had to do."
The Cowboys got the ball first in the ergonomics, but had to get into the game when Zach Cunningham stopped Ezekiel Elliott without any wins in the third and first. Coach Jason Garrett defended his decision not to go.
"We felt as if at this stage of the game, the way our defense was playing, the idea was to nail them here," he said.
Houston was only 1 in 5 in the red zone on Sunday, while Fairbairn scored four goals to help the Texans win the victory.
This is Houston's first win over the Cowboys (2-3) since the team's first game on September 8, 2002, thus ending a three-game losing streak against Dallas. The Texans (2-3) did it in front of a record crowd of 72,008 franchises, which was peppered with abundant Cowboys fans.
Houston defensive end Jadeveon Clowney did not realize that the Texans had not beaten the Cowboys for 16 years, but they understood the importance of victory.
"It's a big win, not just for us but for the city of Houston," he said. "The Cowboys are the No. 1 team in the US For us, winning and winning at home was very important to us – we needed that win."
Deshaun Watson racked up 375 yards with a touchdown and interception for the Texans, who won in overtime for the second week in a row.
Dak Prescott had 208 yards and a touchdown, but he made two interceptions for the Cowboys. Elliott, who entered the game as the NFL's top running back, was limited to 54 yards rushing.
"We just have not managed to attack," Prescott said. "I do not know if there is one thing you can identify, but we must understand it."
The Texans were late in the fourth quarter when Xavier Woods intercepted Watson, who launched under strong pressure, 10 seconds from the end, to return 15 yards to Dallas. Kareem Jackson almost intercepted Prescott in the next game Hail Mary, in the final game of the regulation, was knocked down in the end zone by receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who entered the defense.
A 27-yard interfering call from Byron Jones on a Hopkins ball brought Houston closer to the 1-yard line in the third quarter. But two missed games followed by an incomplete pass forced another field placement, giving the Texans a 16-13 lead with about 8 and a half minutes left.
The Cowboys tied for 48 yards in less than six minutes. This command was highlighted by a 44-yard pass from Prescott to Tavon Austin that he made after escaping the bags of J.J. Watt, Brandon Dunn and Zach Cunningham.
The second interception of Prescott took place when Johnathan Joseph broke a pass and rookie Justin Reid caught her just before she hit the ground in the third quarter. The Texans drove to the 3-yard line in the next possession before the car stalled and Fairbairn kicked a 21-yard field goal to tie at 13-13.
Hopkins groped after a catch early in the third quarter. Jourdan Lewis recovered and returned to Houston 16. The Cowboys regained the advantage when Prescott found Allen Hurns in the back of the end zone on a 3-yard touchdown that is 13-10.
The Texans headed for the 2-yard line later in the second but Watson's pass on the third fall fell incomplete and they arranged for a 20-yard placement to bring the lead to 10-6. .
INJURY
Houston RB Lamar Miller, who had been injured in the chest this week, was active but did not play. CB Texans Kayvon Webster left the game in the first quarter with a quadriceps injury and did not return.
THE DANCE OF COUTEE
The Texans took their first lead when rookie Keke Coutee, who made his debut last week, scored on a 1-meter run early in the second quarter. Coutee celebrated her first career touchdown with a dance called the "Shiggy Challenge" of a Drake song called "In My Feelings" which includes the phrase: "Kiki, do you like me?"
He had already said that he did not like this song because he was fed up with everyone singing to him, but he seems to have gone beyond that now.
"I just gave people what they wanted to see," he laughs.
