Traditionally, the trade deadline in the NFL has come and gone with little fanfare – and with far less activity than you would see in the NBA or Major League Baseball. The trend changed last season, however, as players like Jimmy Garoppolo, Kelvin Benjamin and Duane Brown were moved just before the deadline.
This trend continued in 2018, as we saw an increase in activity the week before the deadline and a wave of movement just before 4 pm. HE on Tuesday. Yes, the NFL trade deadline is now a real event.
As Kevin Clark of The Ringer said, the activity of the deadline looked like something you would see in MLB:
Kevin Clark @Bykevinclark
A third round choice for maybe a mid-season rental. We have passed the deadline for the baseball trade. I am in paradise.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Detroit Lions have traded their wide receivers Golden Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles for a third-round pick. Tate, who has 517 yards and three touchdowns, is still a quality receiver and should help broaden the Eagles offense.
The prospect of playing for the reigning Super Bowl champion seems to have a little Tate, shall we say, pumped:
Tate was not the only veteran receiver to move just before the deadline. The Denver Broncos have decided to trade Demaryius Thomas against the Houston Texans for a fourth-round pick and a seventh-round swap, as reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media:
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
Terms: #Texans trade for #Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas in exchange for a 4th round pick and teams also trade 7th players. Big move to Houston.
Like Tate, Thomas has passed the 30 year mark but continues to be productive. He has 402 yards and three touchdowns this season.
The addition of Thomas makes a lot of sense to the Texans, who have lost the wide receiver Will Fuller V as a result of a torn ACL during the eighth week against the Miami Dolphins. However, as Lance Zierlein of NFL Media points out, Texans may want to rework Thomas's contract:
Lance Zierlein @LanceZierlein
The addition of Demaryius Thomas gives Texans another big target that can work wide AND vertically. I do not see the Texans propose a 4th round without expecting to redo a contract at some point. Will Fuller's ongoing sustainability issues make it a necessary gesture.
Thomas must currently $ 14 million in base salary for 2019.
The Dallas Cowboys sent a first-round pick to the Oakland Raiders for Amari Cooper in one of the deals made the week before the deadline. Considering the prices for Tate and Thomas on the deadline – and the fifth-round pick that the New England Patriots paid for Josh Gordon earlier this season – Dallas's decision seems questionable at best, with hindsight .
Grant Paulsen @granthpaulsen
While large receiver transactions are taking place, the deal between Cowboys and Amari Cooper seems worse and worse.
Josh Gordon scored a 5
Demaryius Thomas earned a 4
Golden Tate brought back a 3Dallas gave Cooper a 1.
Adam Rank @Adamrank
Have you ever spent a lot of money on a pair of kicks only for your rival to wrap up with a better pair that costs $ 100 less?
That's what the Cowboys must feel when they see the Eagles get a Golden Tate for a 3rd place.
Bleacher's report @Bleacher's report
Golden Tate: 3rd round choice
Demaryius Thomas: choice of 4th round
Josh Gordon: 5th round pick?? Amari Cooper: choice of the first round https://t.co/VB1adWP2OQ
Cooper has only 280 yards and one touchdown this season.
While the Lions and Broncos were moving their wide receivers for value, the Green Bay Packers may have dropped rider / receiver Ty Montgomery for other reasons.
Montgomery missed an attempt to return a misguided kick in the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Rams. Who cost the quarter Aaron Rodgers a blow to a last attempt to return to a deficit of two points.
Montgomery had already lost the favor of the offense and this decision may have sealed his fate:
Michael David Smith @MichaelDavSmith
The fact is that even if Ty Montgomery had not fumbled, his decision to withdraw the kickoff from the end zone was terrible for other reasons: it cost two minutes of warning to the Packers, and he did not even reach the 25 – yard line. The fumble was only the icing on the cake.
Montgomery is now going to the Baltimore Ravens for cheap. According to Andrew Siciliano of NFL Media, the Ravens had a flight:
Andrew Siciliano @AndrewSiciliano
Ty Montgomery is a good player. The exchange against 2020 7th rounder is a gift.
Montgomery was not the only player that the Packers had decided to move before the deadline. They also moved the security Ha Ha Clinton-Ten, sending it to the Washington Redskins:
What's interesting is that Clinton-Dix may have wanted to be part of another team. As Zach Kruse of Packers Wire pointed out, security did its best to let the teams know that it was available:
Zach Kruse @zachkruse2
Ha Ha Clinton-Ten again tweeted this morning's RapSheet report on Clinton-Ten's availability for trade.
If Clinton-Dix really wanted to go out, this gesture could prove beneficial for all.
Ryan Wood @ByRyanWood
In both trades, you can argue the addition by subtraction. Especially with Ha Ha Clinton-Ten. #Packers tried to make him a team leader, but it was still like throwing a square peg into a round hole.
Team leaders do not broadcast their intention to play elsewhere during a season.
Let's hope that the addition by subtraction helps the Packers out of the season. Otherwise, we could consider another incredible season for Rodgers, without saying anything about it.
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerNFL
Honest question for Packers fans:
What do you think of the Ha Ha Clinton-Ten trade?
It certainly does not help them win this year, so just concede another @ AaronRodgers12
season at its peak?8 consecutive years without even going to the Super Bowl with the most talented QB of all time …
These Rams the Packers fell at week 8? They took steps to improve their pass just before the deadline, by hanging on to the forefront and the former third overall pick, Dante Fowler Jr., of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
If Los Angeles manages to get quality production out of Fowler, it could turn a pass that has already produced 22 bags into an elite unit. The purchase of former first-turn talent is a trend for these Rams.
Andrew Siciliano @AndrewSiciliano
. @ RamsNFL, again, have 7 former first-round defensive choices.
Aaron Donald
Ndamukong Suh
Michael Brockers
Aqib Talib
Marcus Peters
Mark Barron
Dante Fowler, Jr.
Benjamin Allbright @AllbrightNFL
Rams do not even treat people anymore. They just let other teams write and then swap their choices in the middle of the round …
Jacksonville, meanwhile, gets rid of a player who just did not work.
Albert Breer @AlbertBreer
Dante Fowler had become a combustible part in Jacksonville's fuel locker room, so the asking price for him had dropped in the last two months.
Speaking of not working, offensive midfielder Veon Bell has done nothing like this for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season. With James Conner taking the lead role, the Steelers would probably have wanted something back for Bell as long as they could, but that will not happen.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter
There was not much doubt, but the RB The Steelers' Veon Bell will not be traded because it can not be traded because it still has not reported to the Steelers and signed his franchise offer at 1 pm Without signing before 4 pm today, it can not be processed. So, no trade of Bell this season.
It is difficult to be exchanged when you refuse to be under contract.
Bell is far from the only notable player to have not been moved before the deadline. Schefter reported Tuesday that Cleveland Browns linebacker Jamie Collins, New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins, and Raiders smuggler Bruce Irvin were also topics in the trade talks:
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
From @gmfb: What are the advocates involved in trade negotiations? #Packers S Haha Clinton-Ten, #Browns LB Jamie Collins, #Raiders pass-rusher Irvin Bruce, #Giants CB Janoris Jenkins and others … https://t.co/oNJCyhP4LC
Jenkins was a popular name before the trade deadline, as was Landon Collins of Giants Safety. However, New York decided to stop the sale at Damon Harrison and Eli Apple.
Stapleton Art @art_stapleton
I guess it was not a cheap sale for the giants after all. More trades, at least after the season
It is a little surprising that the Giants have not tried to conclude more contracts, especially since their season is over at 1-7. It is also a bit surprising that a potential buyer like the Pittsburgh Steelers adds nothing.
SteelerNation @SteeIerNation
#Steelers made calls, but was not able to do business. They will stay with what they have.
The Patriots, who are often active in trading, have failed to reach an agreement before the trading deadline, although they have attempted to acquire Thomas, according to Michael Giardi of the NFL Network. :
Michael Giardi @Mike Giardi
#The patriots stayed at Demaryius Thomas's house. A League source thinks that Pats' demand for the Broncos to eat money on trade has led Denver to take a different direction. A competitive offer but not – obviously – sufficient.
Although some planned agreements were not concluded, it was still one of the most active deadlines ever seen in the NFL. We will now spend the last nine weeks of the season determining which transactions or non-transactions will have a significant impact.
Splashing is exciting, but it only makes sense to get closer to a Super Bowl.
