Defensive coordinator fired after ugly Cincinnati loss
The Bengals have fired defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, a day after their historically bad performance in a 51-14 loss to the Saints.
Visiting New Orleans scored on every possession except the last one — when it took a knee in field-goal range.
The Bengals (5-4) have given up 500 yards in three straight games — a first in the Super Bowl era — and are on pace to give up an NFL record for yards in a season. Cincinnati has dropped three of its last four games while allowing 481, 551, 576 and 509 yards.
In another staff change, the Bengals are adding fired Browns coach Hue Jackson, a source says. Jackson, who was dismissed by Cleveland on Oct. 29 with one year left on his contract after going 3-36-1 in two-plus seasons, will take an unspecified position with the Bengals.
It’s the second straight year the Bengals have fired a key assistant coach during the season. Last year, Cincinnati fired offensive coordinator Ken Zampese after an 0-2 start. Head coach Marvin Lewis got a two-year contract extension at the end of last season.
“Teryl worked very hard, but I just felt like we have to rock their world, shake things up,” said Lewis, who will run the defense starting with Sunday’s game at Baltimore.
“They’re trying to get things fixed now,” defensive end Carlos Dunlap said. “If you weren’t paying attention, you’re paying attention now.”
Injury updates • Los Angeles Rams receiver Cooper Kupp is out for the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee. Kupp, who led the Rams in yards receiving last season, was hurt on a noncontact play Sunday; the second-year slot receiver had 40 catches for 566 yards and six TDs this season. … Philadelphia lost another key player for the season when CB Ronald Darby tore his ACL in the second half of the loss to Dallas on Sunday night. The defending Super Bowl champions lost starting safety Rodney McLeod to a similar injury in September. . … Chargers LB Denzel Perryman will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury. Perryman, who has started every game this season, was second on the team with 51 tackles. … Baltimore QB Joe Flacco is nursing a hip injury that could threaten his availability for Sunday’s game against Cincinnati. Coach John Harbaugh said Monday that Flacco’s status against the Bengals is “up in the air” and could be a game-time decision.
Carolina makes RB switch • The Panthers have waived backup running back C.J. Anderson, a 1,000-yard rusher last season with the Broncos, and signed veteran Travaris Cadet, 29, as a replacement.
In nine games this season, the 27-year-old Anderson ran 24 times for 104 yards and had one reception for a 24-yard touchdown.
Peterman cut by Bills • Buffalo has released turnover-prone quarterback Nathan Peterman.
The move was made as the Bills enter their open date week. Earlier Monday, coach Sean McDermott backed Peterman by saying he maintained his confidence in the second-year player.
Peterman became the odd man out with Buffalo carrying four quarterbacks, and with rookie Josh Allen set to reclaim his starting job after missing four games with a sprained right throwing elbow.
Peterman was also passed on the depth chart by newly signed Matt Barkley, who took over the starting job in a 41-10 win over the New York Jets on Sunday. Derek Anderson, the third quarterback on Buffalo’s roster, has missed two games because of a concussion.
Peterman threw 13 interceptions in nine career appearances and four starts with the Bills.
Saints sign Marshall • New Orleans has signed veteran receiver Brandon Marshall.
Marshall’s addition adds depth to an offense that already leads the NFL in scoring with 36.7 points a game.
Last week, the Saints signed receiver Dez Bryant, but he tore an Achilles tendon in only his second practice and never played a game for New Orleans.
This will be the seventh NFL team for the 34-year-old Marshall, who has posted eight 1,000-plus-yard seasons in his 13-year career.
