Former Gophers striker Nick Connelly died Wednesday after a three-month battle with cancer, his father, Chuck Connelly, said in a statement posted on Twitter Thursday morning.
"On Wednesday, September 19, 2018, Heaven needed a proper tackle and Nick Connelly got the call," said Chuck Connelly's release. "Nick was diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma in June 2018. Burkitt syndrome is very rare and aggressive. Nick won the battle with aggressive chemotherapy until the cancer became resistant to all chemotherapeutic treatments. Nick was a handsome young athlete with a very kind heart and a big smile. "
Connelly, a former star of Red Wing High School, was 22 on Monday.
He started five games for the Gophers last year as a sophomore, but he left football because of concussions. His last game for the Gophers was Oct. 7 at Purdue, where he suffered a concussion.
"Nick loved his friends, hunting, ducks, geese, deer and pheasants with his father and brothers and ate mom's cooking," Chuck Connelly's statement continued. "Nick also loved playing football for his Minnesota Golden Gophers State Team. Nick's other pleasures included mountain snowboarding, grilling, meat and cooking. Nick attended River Valley Church in downtown Minneapolis.
"Our heart breaks and is devastated by Nick's loss," the statement said. "We want to thank the thousands of friends, family and strangers from across the country today who have sent their prayers, kindness and love to Nick and our family.
