NOTIgeria has launched an investigation to identify the source of an epidemic of monkeypox that has infected two people in the UK with this life-threatening disease.

The Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) reported that it was cooperating with Public Health England after two apparently unrelated cases of monkeypox were reported in Cornwall and Blackpool.

The two patients have reportedly traveled to Nigeria, where a major epidemic of viruses began 12 months ago. Seven of the 113 people who contracted the virus in Nigeria died.

Cases of the disease, which normally spread from animals to humans, have been reported in 16 of Nigeria's 36 states.

"After the recent report of the two cases in the UK, NCDC collaborated with the British Public Health Agency … to investigate these cases," NCDC said in a statement. , detection and response to monkeypox cases. "

Monkeypox remains a rare disease and is generally confined to remote areas of central and western Africa, where locals may come into contact with infected wild animals. The disease is often transmitted by handling monkeys and rodents, according to health officials.
