Nigerian authorities announced on Monday that they are looking for 12 sailors of a Swiss registered freighter, kidnapped by pirates over the weekend.

The MV Glarus was attacked Saturday near the city of Port Harcourt from Lagos. The owner of the ship, Massoel Shipping, said the pirates used long ladders, cutting wire to capture a dozen sailors from the crew of 19 people.

The Nigerian Agency for Maritime Administration and Security announced that it had launched a search and rescue operation in coordination with the Nigerian Navy and other security services, and would negotiate an "unconditional release" of prisoners.

Massoel Shipping said it would not divulge the identity or nationality of the missing crew members for their safety, but the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday that one of its citizens was among those who were taken.

Kidnappings are common in Nigeria, and more and more often in the Gulf of Guinea, where the Swiss ship was attacked.

According to the International Maritime Bureau, all in the Gulf of Guinea, six crew abductions took place at sea during the first half of 2018.
