Yesterday, Nigeriens from six geopolitical areas disagreed on what was meant by the approval of PDP presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar by former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
Obasanjo, while endorsing Atiku's presidential ambition, said he was confident that the PDP's candidate would do better than the outgoing president, President Muhammadu Buhari.
Among those who spoke to avant-garde Saturday, one can mention Alhaji Balarabe Musa, former governor of Kaduna State; Chief of State Edwin Clark; The legislator of the Second Republic, Dr. Junaid Mohammed; National President of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, air marshal Idongesit Nkanga, retired; and chief strategist of the Delta State Government, Chief Paulinus Akpeki.
Others are former Political Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Akin Osuntokun; Professor Jerry Agada, former Minister of State for Education, and National Coordinator of the Coalition for Peace in the Niger Delta, Zik Gbemre.
Atiku will not do better than Buhari – Balarebe Musa
Musa said: "Nigerians risk having a fascist government under Atiku because of its open alignment with former heads of state and retired generals, who have questions to answer.
Ignoring the noise of elections, Buhari told ministers
"That's why I am very disappointed by the illusion of some Nigerians that Atiku is better than Buhari. There is absolutely no comparison between Buhari and Atiku.
"The former heads of state, the retired generals and the PDP are afraid of Buhari's candidacy for the second term. These people and the PDP mortally fear that, if Buhari returns to power, he investigates the criminal annulment of June 12 and leads a more ruthless war against corruption.
"They are clearly fighting against Buhari, not because they do not know that Atiku is not the same, but because they are aware that Atiku will not revisit their misdeeds of the past.
"Atiku should be wondering if Obasanjo can easily forgive him and mobilize his part of the country for his victory in 2019."
Approval will move Nigeria – Clark forward
Clark said, "Obasanjo's approval of Atiku is a welcome breakthrough. This shows that Nigeria is a united country. It also implies that as human beings, we should forgive each other. What Obasanjo did is the right thing.
"It will definitely move the country forward. Obasanjo is a man with a very strong voice. And if he approves Atiku, who was his vice-president with whom he had some differences, it's a very good development for the country.
"I congratulate both of them for coming to work together in the best interests of Nigeria."
Obasanjo has no electoral value – Junaid
For his part, Mohammed said: "Obasanjo does not deserve the kind of attention that he has bestowed upon him for Atiku's so-called forgiveness, as he has no electoral value or any record of winning elections. In 1999, he lost his parish, his local government and his state. He won the election only because other people have won their wards, local governments and states.
"The idea of supporting candidates by former leaders, media and institutions in Nigeria does not always lead to victory, but to the credibility and performance of the candidates."
Obasanjo is a comedian – Gbemre
Gbemre said, "We can not help but ask if the approval came from Obasanjo's heart. It is Obasanjo who publicly tore up his PDP card, denounced his membership and declared that he would remain an elderly and neutral state man. Forgot what he said about Atiku in 2006? Obasanjo became a comedian. ''
The state of the nation informed the decision of Obasanjo – Agada, former minister
Agada also said: "In terms of his support by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, I do not see anything wrong with that. Obasanjo had endorsed the aspirants in the past. He must not apologize to anyone. That's his preference. If he approved Atiku, it means that he perceived in him a value indicating that he can be a good president for the country and that no one can question him.
"As far as I am concerned, the allegation that this is a gang is unfounded. Obasanjo had approved President Buhari before the 2015 general election and it worked, but no one cried foul.
"Now that he has approved Atiku, they describe him as a gang. Why do people bother about this? He expressed his opinion after examining the situation in the country at the moment. I do not see anything wrong with what he did.
"My belief is that Obasanjo has always worked hard for this country since he was a military and then civilian leader."

Reacting to the development, Osuntokun said: "Buhari substitutes, who marvel at the meeting of President Olusegun Obasanjo and the future president, Atiku Abubakar, are right to see that it is about An unusual development.
