Nintendo announced earlier today that it was posting a show announcing new games scheduled for tonight after an earthquake occurred just off the Japanese island of Hokkaido.
Nine people were killed, many homes were destroyed and more than three million people in the area are still without electricity.
Nintendo has therefore postponed today's Nintendo Direct event "out of respect".
Many fans praised Nintendo for being late, with comments from the community supporting the firm's decision.
"Do not worry about Direct. Everyone must first be safe. Pray for Japan, "said a user. Others said that they were happy, on behalf of the community, that the ads had been delayed until everyone could watch it.
Others, however, were less charitable.
"Was the pre-recorded video injured or something? … Japan suffers earthquakes every year. What's up? Said a commentator particularly insensitive.
"It was probably not a big earthquake, I did not see it on the news," said another magnitude quake of 6.7 that did dozens of victims after hitting shortly after 3 am
Another simple Twitter user said, "The earthquake has nothing to do with Nintendo Direct. No luck to those of Hokkaido, but they can watch it later or read a summary.
Some even posted earthquake memes.
