A man who mocked him unscrupulously to shave aboard a NJ Transit train was just trying to clean up after spending days in a homeless shelter, he said.
"My life is completely fucked up. That's why I was shaving on the train, "56-year-old Anthony Torres told The Associated Press.
A video of Torres sitting in his seat and quickly running around his face with a razor on the Manhattan train Thursday night was posted on Twitter. On Monday, the clip deleted since had 2.4 million views and a second video showing Torres shaved with a beer in his hand.
Twitter users have insulted Torres in response to his public grooming, including "slob," "animal," and "naughty."
"I'm shocked, he did not open his whole face like that. It takes skills, "wrote @JayShams.
The truth is that Torres had been staying at a homeless shelter in New York and had asked for help to his family in New Jersey. A brother gave him money for the ticket from Penn Station at 7 pm. Thursday to Trenton – to stay with another brother.
Torres left the shelter before having the chance to shower and clean, he said, adding that he wanted to be "presentable".
"I do not mean I'm homeless, let everyone know," he said. "That's why I was shaving."
Now, Torres stays with his brother Thomas, 57, in Atco, New Jersey.
Thomas Torres said, "They grew up poor with four other brothers, raised on a farm in Hammonton, New Jersey, about 35 miles from Philadelphia.
Anthony worked on a number of odd jobs, including casino guard and construction, then moved wherever he worked and lived in motels or slept in bus depots.
When he arrived at his brother's house, he asked for a sleeping bag, saying he was ready to spend the night under a bridge.
"For so many years, he has lived this way and I am sorry for him. It's hard to see the life that he has lived, "said Thomas Torres, his voice filled with tears.
Anthony said he did not realize he was filmed and was stunned – and upset when he realized a video of him was being broadcast online.
"I never thought it would become viral, people would laugh at me," he said.
Thomas added, "Maybe people will have more sense of knowing [I’ve] been through."
