September is Children's Cancer Awareness Month and North Lamar ISD is working to raise awareness of children under 15 years of age as the leading cause of death from illness.

During the month of September, students, teachers and staff at North Lamar wear gold to raise public awareness of childhood cancer. The student council has entrusted North Lamar High School staff with staffing. Friday September 28th has been designated "Gold Out Day" for all North Lamar. To make sure everyone has something to wear, the junior high school class at North Lamar has sold gold t-shirts for the day.

The gifted classes and at Higgins Elementary Elementary School, Everett Elementary, Aaron Parker Elementary and Bailey Intermediate contribute by collecting children's caps at the Texas Oncology Center. New ceilings may be deposited in "Caps for a Cure" collection boxes outside each elementary office.

Bailey's students can pay a dollar on Friday to wear hats with the proceeds of the campaign. In addition, some fourth- and fifth-graders are drawing encouraging cards for children currently in hospital.

According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, 15,780 children under 21 years old are diagnosed with cancer each year; about a quarter of them will not survive the disease. Only a diagnosis alone can upset the life of the whole family. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month highlights the types of cancer that largely affect child survival issues and, most importantly, helps raise funds for research and family support.
