The Wisconsin season is not dead yet.
The Badgers suffered a brutal home defeat against BYU last week, but rebounded thanks to a 28-17 victory over Iowa in front of a raging crowd in Iowa City.
Wisconsin trailed for much of the second half, but put in an impressive training when he needed it the most. Iowa led 17-14 by going back to the Badgers with 5:40 to go.
At this point in the game, Wisconsin has been forced to launch seven of its first nine races. But this time was different. Alex Hornibrook led the Badgers on a 10-game, 88-yard run. Hornibrook was 5-in-5 on the disc and his last throw was a 17-yard drive to A.J. Taylor for the winning score.
After 21-17, Iowa reclaimed the track with 57 seconds to go, but his return attempt was halted when Nate Stanley's pass was intercepted by linebacker T.J. Edwards. The Badgers then added a touchdown in a 33-yard draw by side Alec Ingold.
The missed opportunities of Iowa
Iowa had amazing mistakes and opportunities scattered throughout the match. In the first Hawkeyes practice, they drove inside the 10-meter line. However, the Wisconsin defense pocketed Stanley on a quarterback.
In the ensuing race, Wisconsin reached 95 yards and took a 7-0 lead over a touchdown pass from Hornibrook to tight winger Jake Ferguson.
While the match was tied 7-7, the opening of the second half of Iowa also collapsed in Wisconsin territory. Instead of a disappointing turnover, it ended with a shot on goal and a 10-7.
The most expensive mistake may have been made by special teams when a Wisconsin pawn left Shaun Beyer deep within Iowa. The Badgers then jumped on the free ball at 10. Three games later, UW took a 14-10 lead with another pass from Hornibrook TD, this time against Danny Davis.
Iowa came back to the lead with 17-14 at the end of the third period and had some workouts to add to the lead, which may have put the Badgers out of the way. But both times they jumped, setting the stage for the winning Wisconsin campaign.
The interception of Stanley was the icing on the cake of a frustrating evening for the Hawkeyes.
Wisconsin's chances in CFP are alive and well
At the beginning of the season, many had Wisconsin as the legitimate candidate for the college football playoffs. These chances took a huge hit with the defeat against BYU, but the win on Saturday night means the Badgers have not yet died from a national point of view.
Wisconsin has been criticized for its mediocre Big Ten West program last year. UW still plays his division opponents, but has road matches against Michigan and Penn State on the horizon. If the Badgers can win these games while avoiding a new surprise, they could be back in the national table before the Big Ten match.
But do not be too far ahead.
