HIALEAH, Fla. – An English speaking customer seeking to order a meal at Taco Bell in Hialeah was denied service by an employee who spoke only Spanish.
Alexandria Montgomery and a passenger attempted to drive to the restaurant Wednesday night at 785 Ninth Street.
What happened next was captured in video.
When Montgomery tried to place his order in English at the driving stand, she was rejected by the employee who spoke only Spanish. When she drove up to the window, the employee told Montgomery that no one in the restaurant spoke English and that she could not order.
"It's Hialeah," said the employee in Spanish while threatening Montgomery by saying that she would call the police.
The unnamed employee also suggested Montgomery to visit another Taco Bell location where she might be able to order in English.
"It's America, you do not all try to take over the entire population," says Montgomery when the employee reiterates that she can not take her order because that she does not speak Spanish.
A second Taco Bell employee introduces himself and also denies Montgomery's service.
"It's the first time I've been discriminated against," Montgomery told Local 10. "It's a little crazy, it's a little crazy."
In a statement released on Friday, a spokesman for Taco Bell disapproved of the incident and the actions of the employees.
"It does not meet our expectations of customer experience, we worked quickly to solve the problem with the customer so that it does not happen again."
Montgomery ended up leaving without food, but wondering why language was an obstacle to preparing a meal.
"I understand that it is Hialeah and the main language here is Spanish, but it's like, go, you do not get … every customer is not Hispanic language, "she said.
Local 10 reporter Jeff Weinsier went to the Taco Bell in question on Friday. A woman at the counter confirmed to her that she spoke English and that he could order food in English. She said "no comment" when asked about the incident with Montgomery.
