No Releases of Radiological Materials at Hanford Nuclear Waste Site

The US Department of Energy later stated that inspections carried out in a tunnel containing waste had confirmed the absence of radiological releases.

"Lights and cameras placed inside the tunnel to support the stabilization efforts showed steam in the tunnel, resulting in the hardening of the engineering grout recently placed in the tunnel to stabilize it," said the agency in a statement. "The curing process generates heat and moisture. When hot, humid air was leaving the tunnel and interacting with the cool atmosphere of the morning, the steam was visible."

Workers' instructions to go to the shelter were preventative, the site said earlier.

The Hanford site used to produce plutonium for atomic weapons.

The building where the steam was spotted Friday contains equipment designed to move a massive door used to access the tunnel, said the employee's statement. The last cars containing contaminated material were last placed here in 1996, Hanford officials said.
