Teddy's mother, Sil Mazzini, gave her the choice for her 6th birthday: the family could go to Disney World or Legoland, where Sil could organize a party for her friends.
Without hesitation, he chose to organize a party and Mazzini immediately began planning. She booked seats for 40, 30 classmates and their parents, at Tuscon's Peter Piper Pizza, sent out invitations to school, collected bags of gifts and waited for the big day of October 21st.
But none of the guests came to the pizzeria. It was just Mazzini, Teddy and the boy's father coming from outside.
Mazzini has received a call from a parent asking him to cancel. But otherwise, she waits for about 32 guests. Nobody has come.
Teddy did not really notice, said Mazzini in a phone interview. He was too busy playing arcade games with his father. He won a bundle of tickets and redeemed them for a price. He ate pizza. It was a happy birthday. He went to school Monday in a good mood.
"He did not understand it," said Mazzini. "If it happened to a child of 11 or 12, it would be difficult. But he is so young that he is fine.
But Mazzini was upset. She spent all her time and money on invitations, decorations and pizzas. She bought enough cake for 40 guests.
"I have a little fridge," she says.
A friend told him to take a photo and post it on Facebook to vent his anger. Then the message became viral.
Two local TV stations wrote articles about Teddy's birthday. A local radio station wanted to organize another party for him.
"No thanks," she said. "We all came out of the pizza. More pizzas.
And then the Phoenix Suns saw the story float on Twitter and offered their own birthday wishes. "How about celebrating with thousands of people here!" Tweeted the team. "Tickets for Wednesday's #SunsVSLakers match are yours."
"Who knows what has really happened, but in the end, we can give a 6 year old child a special birthday special experience and something that he will never forget. never, "said Suns President and CEO Jason Rowley in an interview phone. "As long as they do not show up in the Lakers jerseys."
The team donated four tickets to Teddy for Friday's game at the Talking Stick Resort Arena. He will have time to go out with the players during the preparatory session and meet the mascot of the Suns, Gorilla, who shares Teddy's favorite food: pizza.
("I bet you thought we were going to say bananas, no? In fact, he likes them on his pizza," reads Gorilla's official biography, "but many pizzerias do not have this particular garnish . ")
Teddy is a big fan of sports, said his mother. This will be his first trip to a major sporting event.
"When you have a professional sports team in your market, you want to be able to do that kind of work," Rowley said. "Who can really argue with a 6-year-old child attending a Suns-Lakers game?"
