Norm Macdonald about Roseanne Barr: she is "left" except for Israel

Norm Macdonald has known Roseanne Barr for more than three decades and is confident about one thing: despite his unwavering support for the Trump administration, Barr is a Liberal at heart.

Decades ago, Barr gave Macdonald her first job in Hollywood when she hired him to write for "Roseanne". He also wrote for the unfortunate reboot that was canceled this year in the midst of extreme controversy.

"I've always known him as a leftist," Macdonald told the Hollywood Reporter. "On the original show, she had [a network sitcom’s] first gay couple. She would always want more minorities in the show, on the editorial staff. When she did it [reboot,] it was all his idea to represent all these different orientations and religions, etc.

But while Barr has demonstrated traditionally liberal and progressive values, Macdonald said, she is obsessed with an issue that does not fully fit the Democratic agenda.

"What I do know is that she's a motivated single-problem person, and that problem is Israel," Macdonald said. "It's all that matters to her politically. It's left in everything else." But that's why she did not like the Obama administration, because She snubbed Netanyahu. "

He added, "I believe that's the only reason she voted Trump."

In the last month of its presidency, the Obama administration took what some have called a "shotgun" against Israel by abstaining from a UN Security Council vote calling for Israel to cease to build settlements in the Palestinian territory. Obama's choice not to vote allowed, for the first time in four decades, the Security Council to pass a resolution criticizing Israel.

Barr said earlier this month that she was preparing for a long trip to Israel this fall and is hoping to permanently relocate there.

"I have the opportunity to go to Israel for a few months and study with my favorite teachers there," Barr said at a recent podcast. "And that's where I'll go and probably move somewhere and study with my favorite teachers."

And although it's a racist tweet that finally clinched Barr's career – she likened Obama's official Valerie Jarrett to "Planet of the Apes" – Macdonald is adamant that these comments do not reflect not his true character.

"She's certainly not racist," he said. "It's just crazy."
