OAKLAND – A Hayward woman was arrested Saturday after crashing her vehicle into an overpass support beam on Interstate 880 that resulted in the northbound lanes of the California Highway Patrol.
At about 3:40 am Saturday, the woman crashed into a beam, driving the construction of a highway on the roadway in the area of 23rd Avenue in East Oakland, the California Highway Patrol said.
The lanes reopened at about 11:30 am Saturday. The 28 year-old driver was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence but said in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, said CHP Officer Matthew Hamer.
The CHP said the woman was speeding when she hit the beam, causing it to be over and over again. 85-foot-long girders that are part of the 23rd Avenue overpass construction project to fall and block the lanes.
A Sig Alert was issued and motorists were on Saturday morning. Caltrans crews and other staff were on scene to assist in removing the beams from the roadway. By 11:30 a.m., Hamer said, all the northbound lanes had been cleared.
Crews were not working on the overpass project at the time of the crash, officials said.
