EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Clayton Thorson had 373 yards and three touchdowns, and Northwestern rallied after another loss in the second half, beating Michigan No. 20, 29-19 on Saturday.
The Spartans (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) came in with the nation's best run defense and kept Northwestern (2-3, 2-1) at 8 yards on the ground, but that did not matter. The Wildcats manage to get the ball through the air and the Michigan State attack is practically inept, with the exception of a brief stretch in the third quarter.
Thorson pitched a 21-yard pass to Cameron Green with 15 seconds to go in the third and a 2-point conversion gave Northwestern a 22-19 lead.
The Wildcats missed a field goal with a time of 6:41 to play, but Michigan State lost 15 yards back with possession that ensued and had to go home. The Spartans again held the defense, and in the next possession, they had the second and first of their 11th place. After two half-sacks, running back Connor Heyward was stopped in fourth place. Thorson scored on a 2-yard run to make it a 10-point game with 2:51 left.
The Spartans took advantage of an interception in the first quarter and led 3-0, but Thorson traded with Kyric McGowan for a 77-yard touchdown with 18 seconds left in the period. Thorson found JJ Jefferson for a 34-yard goal in the second and Northwestern led 14-6 at half-time.
The Wildcats lost 21-3 at half-time in a loss to Akron and climbed 17-0 in the first half in the loss to Michigan last weekend. They also gave the Michigan State advance in a quick sequence in the third quarter.
Felton Davis scored for the Spartans on a 48-yard setback and although a 2-point conversion attempt failed, Michigan State recovered the ball during an interception and took a 19-yard lead. 14 on Brian Lewerke's 3-yard pass to Davis.
Northwestern, however, recovered and won the day the Wildcats clearly looked like the best team.

Northwestern: The Wildcats came close to Michigan last weekend and deserved the win. Northwestern had the right plan, throwing 47 passes against a Michigan State team that excels at stopping the race, and the Wildcats were also impressively defensive in the last quarter.
Michigan State: With a lot of starters from a team that won 10 games a season ago, the Spartans have been a disappointment so far. They had injuries – running back LJ Scott and receiver Cody White were out on Saturday – and the offensive line and the back line now seem to be real problems.

KEY MATCHUP
Northwest QB Clayton Thorson vs. Michigan State High School. The Spartans are ranked No. 1 in the country in defense of the race, so the Northwest Pass game should be crucial. Thorson led the Wildcats to wins in the last two team games, including a 54-40 shootout at Michigan State two years ago.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
North West: DE Joe Gaziano. The junior driver is the seventh on the program's career list with 16 sacks. He leads Northwestern with 21/2 this season.
State of Michigan: WR Felton Davis. The Spartans lost receiver Cody White to a broken hand in the win over Central Michigan last weekend. It is possible that Davis is under more pressure. Davis is second on the team (behind White) with 16 receptions for 278 yards.
