Northwestern was dead and buried, right?
False.
Nebraska led by 10 points with less than three minutes remaining and half of Ryan Field's crowd was ready to congratulate Scott Frost of the Huskers for his first coaching win at the school. The other half of the crowd was wondering why Northwestern never wins at home.
But the Wildcats rallied dramatically, finishing the game tied with 12 seconds left on a 99-yard touchdown run with no downtime before winning 34-31 in overtime.
And in overtime, a child by the name of Drew Luckenbaugh entered the legend of the NU.
Nobody knew Luckenbaugh's name before kick-off. He is a backup player and a UN rescue player, called on duty because of an injury to Charlie Kuhbander.
Luckenbaugh's first try on Saturday was barely on the field, an ugly line that did not smell the goal posts.
But Luckenbaugh managed to win the match 37 yards and was taken by his teammates after NU's shocking victory.
Northwestern's improved to 3-3 and, more importantly, to 3-1 in the Big Ten. The Cats will play Rutgers on Saturday before hosting Wisconsin in a game that will help decide on the Big Ten West.
The Huskers dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten, and Frost will be defeated for conservative left-back playoffs and to set up an unruly team with nine penalties for 89 yards. . These nine represent a low season.
NU earned a memorable performance from Clayton Thorson, who completed 41 of 64 passes for a total of 455 yards. He traded with rookie JJ Jefferson for the winning pass. Flynn Nagel has 12 passes for 220 yards and two goals.
And what's pretty incredible, NU has completed two goals in ten and ten goals mark that has reduced Nebraska's lead to 31-24.
The Cats could not run the ball (32 yards rushing), but, like Thorson's two interceptions, these stats are now one-day footnotes that witnesses will not soon forget.
