The longest run of active wins at FBS has been extended to 16 consecutive games by the 16th UCF (3-0) on Friday night in Orlando. McKenzie Milton The UCF dominated the FAU, 56-36, during a battle between the defending champions of the AAC and the USA Conference.
UCF started on a fast foot with two touchdowns in their first two offensive series in the match, leading a 14-0 lead before the FAU could find an attack with which to work. After the Owls grabbed 17 points, Milton led UCF on the field in the final 90 seconds for a touchdown and UCF never had to turn around. UCF scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 42-23 lead in the fourth quarter.
Milton himself had another big game. Milton scored 306 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 81 yards and three touchdowns. UCF racked up 546 yards and converted seven of the 11th finals for a first try.
FAU had a productive night from their offensive star, Devin Singletary. The running back ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns and was a difference maker who provided an indispensable spark in the first period. But UCF was too difficult to manage for the four quarters. The FAU overturned the ball twice, including at the opening of the match when Chris Robison has been kidnapped. A second late interception in the third quarter also blocked a promising record.
After playing three games, UCF continues to look like the best team in the Group of Five in the race for a spot in the six-year-old list. No Group Five schools made consecutive trips to the New Year Games in the College Football Playoff format, but UCF showed no reason to believe that it was unable to become the first. With the loss of Boise State last week and the AAC accumulating good wins at a conference (helping to surpass some bad losses), the AAC is looking to position itself to send its champion to a big league match at the end of the year. UCF's biggest competition will take place later, including clashes with schools such as Memphis and South Florida.
The FAU's search for a win against one of the top 25 teams will continue. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 0-20 against teams ranked in the Top 25 AP.
UCF will stay home next week for its first and only game against a power conference opponent this season. The Knights will welcome Pitt's Panthers. The UCF canceled a match against North Carolina because of Hurricane Florence last week and a match against Georgia Tech was canceled last season. The Knights will be welcome.
The FAU will begin the quest to defend its US Conference championship last year by opening the press conference on the road against Middle Tennessee State. Middle Tennessee left this week after losing to Georgia last week. A week off before a home game against the Owls is favorable, although the FAU should still be the favorite next week and at the USA conference.
