Amazon bid on 22 regional sports networks, including the New York Yankees YES network, according to sources close to the sales process, who were not allowed to speak in public.

CNBC reported for the first time on Amazon's offer.

RSNs are regional cable channels that typically broadcast live games from local professional teams, colleges and even high schools, as well as commentary programs related to these teams. In December, investment bank Guggenheim Securities valued Fox's NAS package at $ 22.4 billion.

Disney sells the RSNs after buying them at 21st Century Fox as part of its larger acquisition of $ 71.3 billion entertainment assets. Federal regulators told Disney that they would approve the deal that it was selling the RSNs.

If Amazon wins one or the other RSN, the acquisition would be the largest movement ever made by a technology company in the world of sports media. In recent years, technology companies have experimented with the streaming of some games but have not yet acquired any of the exclusive, high-budget offers generally available to major TV channels.

Having RSNs would give Amazon an idea of the economics of local sports rights as well as a way to experiment with smaller, non-national matches.

Amazon currently broadcasts NFL Thursday night games, which are still broadcast on NFL television and Fox's broadcast network.

Among the RSNs for sale include Fox Sports Arizona, Fox Sports Detroit, Fox Sports Florida and a handful of other regional cable channels enjoying the rights of local professional sports teams.

Amazon has become a leading player in streaming Internet streams with its Prime Video bundle, which is part of its larger Amazon Prime subscription service. Amazon Prime Video offers a mix of original series and licensed movies and TV shows.

The addition of RSN, however, would mark a new addition if it was included in Prime Video, which would give the company a way to differentiate itself from competitors such as Netflix and Hulu.
