This is the month of breast cancer awareness – 31 days of ubiquitous pink ribbon. Here are some other statistics to know about breast cancer.

1 of 8 women, or 12 percent, will have breast cancer in their life. For many women, this will not happen until they are old enough.

266.120 New cases of breast cancer among American women are expected this year by the American Cancer Society.

40,920 women will die of breast cancer in 2018, predicts ACS; it's the second leading cause of cancer death in women, behind lung cancer. Again, only 1 of 38 American women will die of breast cancer – 2.6%.

3.1 million In the United States, the current estimate is that of breast cancer survivors.

1-2 years is the frequency with which the US Preventive Services Working Group recommends that women 50-74 get a screening mammogram.

40 percent is the overall estimate of the reduction in mortality in women due to screening mammograms.

60-69 years is the age group most likely to avoid death by passing a screening mammogram.

40-49 years The working group felt that because of the higher risk of false positives, unnecessary biopsies and treatments for cancers that, if left alone, would not kill women during their lifetime . Get a mammogram if you have a parent, brother or child with cancer; know that you have an underlying genetic mutation, such as the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes; or have a history of chest radiation at a young age.

$ 16.5 billion was the cost of breast cancer treatment in the United States in 2016. It is estimated that it will reach $ 20.5 billion by 2020. 1 of 8 American patients with cancer declare themselves bankrupt.

180 billion dollars is the annual cost of health expenditures and the loss of productivity related to breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Survivor Ceremony: 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm Tuesday, October 2nd, at the Tennova Breast Center at North Knoxville Medical Center, 7551 Dannaher Drive, Powell. Breast cancer survivors can decorate the Tennova Healthcare Breast Cancer Survival Tree with ornaments to honor them. The tree will be displayed throughout the month of October.
