The New York City Police Department announced that it was going to suspend the use of a camera model worn on the body after one of the devices had started smoking, then exploding.

On Saturday, an officer recovered a body camera to use during his service, removing it immediately after spotting smoke coming out of the lower portal, the department said.

After removing the camera, she exploded. Nobody was hurt.

The impacted models were Vievu's LEv-5 model body-worn cameras, the department said in a statement.

"As a precaution, the police commissioner has ordered the immediate suspension of the use and distribution of LE-5 camera models," the statement said.

About 3,000 of the 15,000 cameras deployed in the department were affected. Officers with other models of body cameras will still wear them, the NYPD said.

"Nothing is more important than the safety of our officers, and equipping the NYPD with the best equipment is a top priority," the statement said.

Axon, the company that makes Vievu LE-5 body cams, said in a statement that he was working closely with the NYPD to investigate the matter.

"We will do everything necessary to resolve this situation quickly and safely," said Axon's statement.
