Seven members of the NYPD, including at least one detective and a sergeant, were arrested on Wednesday as part of an extensive investigation by the Department of Home Affairs on gambling and prostitution, The Post reported.

More than 40 civilians were also arrested, including a retired vice-detective married to a prostitute, sources said.

The couple has opened several brothels on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens and Brooklyn's Sunset Park, sources said.

The five-year investigation included several phone tapping and focused on the retired officer, the sources said.

As part of Wednesday's busts, Home Affairs officers stormed the home of Sunset Park's 72nd constituency, ordering the supervisor to accompany them downstairs into the locker rooms, where they grabbed their contents, indicated sources.

They also went to the inspector's home, detained him and put him into operation, sources said.

The detective had been assigned to the 72 only about five months ago, previously working within the IAB, sources said.

"Today, those who took the oath and then betrayed it felt the consequences of this infidelity," said James O'Neill, NYPD Police Commissioner.

"The people in this department are rightly held at the highest level and if they do not, the penalty will be quick and severe.

"I thank Deputy Commissioner Joseph Reznick for the thorough investigation by the Office of Internal Affairs, in partnership with the Queens District Attorney's Office, to eliminate this illicit activity. His unit initiated this investigation and, in doing so, sent a clear message that there is no place in the NYPD for criminal or unethical behavior.
