A Bronx bodega owner was questioned after police reported shooting a thief who broke into his shop and demanded money.

A 32-year-old man burst into Morrison Avenue's J supermarket in Soundview late Sunday night and ordered the 43-year-old owner to hand over money, according to New York police. When the worker refused, the suspect attempted to jump over the counter when the owner shot him in the head, the police said.

Police officers rushed to the store and found the suspect unconscious, shot in the head, officials said. He was taken to the hospital in the area where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as Daniel Meeks of the Bronx.

The shop owner was taken to a New York police station, where he was questioned about the robbery, but authorities later said he would not be charged. Police said the suspect was not armed during the attempted robbery.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
