Oakland Athletics clinched last place in the AHL playoffs on Monday night when the Tampa Bay Rays lost to the New York Yankees.
Assuming that Oakland does not eliminate a five-game deficit against Houston Astros, leader of AL West, with six games to go, the A will face the Yankees in the Oct. 3 hobby match after winning their first torrid second half of the season that saw them go 39-20 since the All-Star break.
Oakland had finished in last place in the West for three seasons.
It remains to be determined where the game of wild cards will be played, with the Yankees leading the A by two games.
Oakland was about to start its game in Seattle when the Rays became the last AHL team to be eliminated from the competition despite a record 87-69, their highest mark since 2013.
The winner of the wild-card game will play on Boston Red Sox in the division series, while the Cleveland Indians should face the Astros in the other series.
